What is a Kinetic Watch?

This type of watch requires no battery or winding implement. They rely entirely on the energy provided by the wearer to manufacture their own energy to charge their own batteries. kinetic watches are known for their energy-saving qualities and precision timing. If you are wondering, kinetic energy is the energy of motion. The movement of the wrist it is worn on powers the watch. The Seiko Watch Corporation introduced this type of watch in 1969.

These are the steps on how a kinetic watch works.

1. When the wearer moves their body, oscillating weight rotate within the watch.
2. The rotating becomes a magnetic charge.
3. The magnetic field turns past a wire coil.
4. This stimulates a charge in the wire.
5. The weight is set off center to prevent the electricity from flowing back and canceling itself out.
6. It falls in the chosen direction, creating positive net energy and charging the battery.

Once the watch is fully charged, it can store the energy for six months before requiring a re-charge. It is best if the watch is worn as often as possible to prevent the battery from running down. The energy is stored in the watch’s main capacitor, keeping track of the correct time. After twenty-four hours of inactivity, the watch will go to sleep, so to speak. It is reactivated with a little kinetic energy and the time is reset according to the calculations of the capacitor and only takes a few minutes to recharge. Some watches have an indicator to let the wearer know when it is time to recharge the battery. These watches require maintenance every seven years but it will not need the battery replaced. It will need to have a new capacitor put in.

When you first get a kinetic watch, you need to swing back and forth gently at least fifty times to get the kinetic movement started. The next thing you need to do is pull the watch crown out as far as it will go, set the watch to the correct time, then push the watch crown back in. Again, you must gently swing the watch but this time it is three hundred fifty times to store up a full day’s worth of power before you wear it. Wear it for twelve hours straight to store up another full day of energy. If you do this last step for a month, you will get an extra month of energy.

The History of the Wristwatch

For centuries people have used clocks as a status symbol. Watches and clocks are often seen as stylish, precise and convenient. They are sometimes used only for their artistic value. Although for the most part timekeeping devices are purchased for their technical accuracy such as being precise to the second and even the millisecond. Clocks and watches are collectibles that sometimes come at a high price.

Watch collecting is a popular hobby. What was once a pastime has become a growing business. Whether the collection consists of antique watches from the past or a collection of new precision watches, collecting watches is a wise investment.

At the beginning of the previous century clocks were available for both men and women. First used as pocket clocks and then clocks attached to a pendant which hung from jackets or corsets. With the arrival of war, industry and popular sports trends, watches changed the way we accessorize and how we carry out clocks.
At the end of the 19th century a nanny supposedly invented the first wrist watch by using a bit of cloth to tie a clock around her wrist. The first watches were smaller than pocket clocks and were secured with a leather strap. This took on quickly and other designs were produced to improve the look.

Louis Cartier created the watch as we know it today. His friend, Santos Dumont was a flying hero who needed a watch he would look at with just a flick of the wrist. By 1911 this watch was on the general market for sale. This early day version of the watch was the blueprint for the watch we use today.

This new design for the wrist watch eventually branched out away from the classical round shape that had been in use. Evolving from Cartier’s classical wrist watch other watch shapes started to appear. After 1913 watches began to change in shape and styles. Some watch designs that were in great demand during their time were the ‘gondola’ and Cartier’s ‘tank’. The tank was designed after the shape of English armored cars. They were very popular at the time they were introduced. Shape was not the only change that made watches unique. Features like lunar phases and month/day were added.

One of the most famous watches is the Rolex watch. Introduced in the 1920’s, Rolex debuted with the Rolex Prince and its innovative ‘dual time’ feature made famous by having a seconds sector that was larger than the minutes. Not as well know, the ‘Reverse’ watch was introduced by Jaeger Le Coultre at the same time. This watch could be turned 180 degrees within its case to protect the crystal and dial. It was just as popular at its start but the recession of the 1930’s and World War 2 kept this watch from having the success it was destined to have.

Watches created in the 1910’s to the 1930’s define the watches that we see and wear now. These early versions of the timepiece are among the most valuable and desired by any antique watch collector. Some of the most collectable are those introduced by Cartier, Rolex, and others from that time. Watches continue to change and improve with one of the latest being the kinetic watch. Kinetic watches are popular because of their low- maintenance technology. We will just have to wait and see what the future will bring us in watches.

Watches often come with extra features like a built-in calendar, an appointment alarm. It can be fun customizing the watch you plan to give as a gift. Stay in your price range when shopping for a watch. They can run upward to $10,000, so you will want to set a range first and then limit your shopping to your budget.

Sport watches are popular. From intricate watches made for divers or runners to more fashionable watches that do a bit more than tell time, sports watches are a real crowd pleaser. If you aren’t buying it for a specific sport, choose a watch that comes with basic features. These features include alarms, rater resistance, a timer function and a light to illuminate the face.

If you know of a specific sport that the person enjoys, you can buy a watch with that theme in mind. Some specialized watches are for divers, runners, surfers and many others.

You’ll want to make sure that the band fits comfortably around the person’s wrist. Most are adjustable. Last but not least, check the guarantee and return policies so that the watch can be returned if for some reason it is not the right choice. Set the time on the watch before you wrap the gift.

How to Purchase a Luxury Watch

Buying a luxury watch does not have to be complicated or stressful. If you plan to buy a luxury watch within the next six months, here are some things to keep in mind:

First consider your personal style. Your watch should reflect who you are. You can find bold, colorful, innovated styles as well as many others. Next, what is your purpose in buying a watch? Is it for a specific reason or for everyday use? Think about where you will be wearing your watch before making the final purchase. Also what’s your personality type? Do you love style or do you always need to be first? Think about what you want your watch to say about you.

Know your options. Are you looking for a mechanical watch that requires winding or perhaps you are interested in something that looks stylish but requires little maintenance. If something luxurious but easy to care for is what you want in a watch than you should look into buying a kinetic watch.

Now that you have an idea of what you want in a watch, you need to consider the extras. Luxury watches come with many options. You can have GPS technology, two way radios and many other systems. Some of these additions may benefit you, so be sure to check and see what’s available. You will want to consider a watch case too. Watch cases protect your timepieces from dirt, scratches and other unsafe situations. It’s recommended that an owner of fine watches use a watch case to maintain the longevity and beauty of their watch.

Last think about the different brands. Brand names are important in the watch industry. If you want to make the right impression, discount stores or knock-off luxury watches won’t do if you want to make an impression. If you want to own an exclusive luxury watch there are watch companies that create limited additions. It all depends on what you want in a watch.

The Development of the Watch

The watch was first engineered as long ago as the 15th century. The shipping industry could measure latitude by looking at the stars but did not have a very reliable way to determine longitude. John Harrison is credited for introducing the chronometer.

The first clocks used weighted pendulums but these were not something that could be used at sea or in a portable watch. When the spring mechanism was invented it brought the “pocket clock” to England. This gave clockmakers the ability to put a time keeping piece in a smaller container.

In 1524 Peter Henlein invented the first pocket watch. The early watch only had the hour hand. Because watches at this stage were not very accurate a minute hand was useless. Now that the spring based design had been miniaturized portable watches would work at sea. In 1850 the Waltham Watch Company pioneered interchangeable parts. This company is still one of the top watchmakers today. It was in 1868 that the first wristwatch was made as an accessory for women.

In the early 1900’s, the wristwatch became popular for men because a man, Alberto Santos-Dumont, wanted a convenient way of checking time. He asked his friend, Louis Cartier, to make him a watch that he could be read easily. A leather-band wristwatch was made for him.

The quartz watch industry has brought many changes which include the perpetual calendar, chronograph and minute repeater. Of all the watch improvements that have been made, the kinetic watch is without a doubt one of the most reliable and economical. Without a need for batteries this automatic watch keeps accurate time powered by human motion alone.

The wristwatch grew in popularity during the First World War when officers found it easier on the battlefield to synchronize their attacks by looking at their wrist then pulling out a pocket watch. When they came home from the war they kept their watches and the wristwatch idea took off. Today almost everyone has worn a wristwatch at some time or other.
